Thomas helps leading financial institutions assess the impact of energy transitions, environmental policy, and the physical consequences of environmental change. He advises clients across banking, investment, and insurance to support public disclosures, regulatory stress testing, portfolio construction, improved investment and credit processes to account for climate risk and opportunities.
As the head of McKinsey’s Planetrics team, Thomas oversees the development and deployment of scalable sustainability analytics with our clients including the following:
- expanding the use and functionality of McKinsey’s flagship platform PlanetView, which allows financial institutions access to deep insights on climate risks, opportunities, and impact across all major asset classes under different decarbonisation scenarios
- building lasting capabilities in financial institutions and helping develop inhouse teams who put climate analytics at the core of the credit and investment processes
- supporting major banks in Europe, North American, and Asia–Pacific throughout regulatory stress testing exercises, including climate stress tests
- leading investment risk analysis for major insurance companies and providing input on how climate can be integrated into core assessments for underwriting risk
- supporting full review by model risk management for a US bank that allowed Planetrics to become a formal challenger model for bank processes
- developing and analyzing the financial impacts of bespoke climate scenarios for leading asset managers to support investment decisions, portfolio construction and new product development
Before joining the firm, Thomas led advisory work for financial, energy, and industrial companies on the implications of energy market developments, future technology pathways, and new policy changes.
